History of Ljeppershiem

Ljeppershiem is a historical piece of land. It all started on 25 May 1969 when the Lauwerszee was closed and became Lauwersmeer. Celebrations were held in the wide surroundings. Also in the village of Westergeest. Here the villagers organised a fierljep race across the Oude Zwemmer on 31 May 1969.

After that, developments and circumstances moved at lightning speed. A piece of land was bought by the village community from the village across the so-called Keuningsbrug. Many volunteers spontaneously volunteered to help. A pond was dug and, in 1970, two fixed ramps were built so that villagers could "fierljep" fanatically. The Ljeppershiem was born.

The Ljeppershiem was given a central role in many village activities. It was a regular stopping place for swimmers and youth. And is thus engraved in the collective memory of several generations.
